Post Conference Seminar

Public Management in Political Transition: The Case of Northern Ireland

The IRSPM XV 2011 committee are excited to offer delegates the opportunity to register for a post conference seminar on April 14th 2011. The meeting will take place in Queen’s University, Belfast and will afford attendees a unique insight into public management in political transition.

Often, when we think of public management in transition, we focus on the economic nature of such transitions, particularly in relation to economic liberalisation. Within Northern Ireland, the process has been of a fundamentally political nature, and the journey from extended violent conflict to the slow building of peace has created enormous challenges for those tasked with public management. Such challenges reflect both the legacy of conflict and the difficulties of public management within such a period of transition. Areas such as housing, policing, education and community relations remain highly contentious.

The seminar will explore the theme of ‘Public Management in Political Transition’ from the perspectives of academics in the field, organisational practioners and those who hold elected office in Northern Ireland’s Legislative Assembly.

Speakers include:

Mr Alex Attwood MLA, Minister for Social Development

Mr Peter McNaney, Chief Executive, Belfast City Council

Dr Duncan Morrow, Chief Executive, Northern Ireland  Community Relations Council

The registration fee of €75 includes attendance at the post-conference seminar, bus transfers to and from Belfast, coffee break and lunch, a tour of Belfast city visiting the city’s famous murals and learning about its tumultuous history, as well as see its rapid growth and development and a reception in Belfast City Council Buildings. Delegates can register for this seminar on the conference registration page.
